OTHER được dùng như tính từ đứng trước danh từ số nhiều, dùng để chỉ các đối tượng khác với đối tượng đã đề cập trước đó. (used to refer to a person or thing that is different or distinct from one already mentioned or known about.)

Nghĩa: những cái khác, những người khác.

Ví dụ: The product has many other time-saving features. There is no other work available at the moment.Other students are from Vietnam.

Có thể lược bỏ danh từ sau another nếu danh từ đã xuất hiện trước đó. (used to refer to an additional person or thing of the same type as one already mentioned or known about; one more; a further.)

Chú ý: Trước ANOTHER không dùng tính từ sở hữu, số từ, lượng từ, hay mạo từ “the”.

Nghĩa: một cái khác, một người khác.

Ví dụ: You are drinking soda. Do you want another drink? Mrs. Madrigal buttered another piece of toast. We’re going to have another baby.

OTHERS là danh từ số nhiều, là cách viết tắt của OTHER + Ns khi không muốn nhắc đến danh từ lần 2. Không dùng others + danh từ đếm được số nhiều/ danh từ không đếm được.

Ví dụ: Some of my students like Math, others (= other students) don’t. Some projects are shorter than others (=other projects). Some of these methods will work. Others (=other methods) will not.

Như đã biết, THE là mạo từ thêm vào trước danh từ để thể hiện tính xác định của danh từ đi sau. Ta dùng THE OTHER khi có 2 chủ thể mà nhắc tới 1 cái, ta nghĩ ngay đến cái còn lại..

THE OTHER đứng một mình được hiểu là cái kia, người còn lại (một đối tượng).

Dùng với danh từ đếm được

Dùng với danh từ không đếm được

another + danh từ đếm được số ít = một cái nữa, một cái khác, một người nữa, một người khác (= one more).

another pencil = one more pencil

the other + danh từ đếm được số ít = cái cuối cùng còn lại (của một bộ), người còn lại (của một nhóm), = last of the set.

the other pencil = the last pencil present

Other + danh từ đếm được số nhiều = mấy cái nữa, mấy cái khác, mấy người nữa, mấy người khác (= more of the set).

other pencils = some more pencils

The other + danh từ đếm được số nhiều = những cái còn lại (của một bộ), những người còn lại (của một nhóm), = the rest of the set.

the other pencils = all remaining pencils

Other + danh từ không đếm được= một chút nữa ( = more of the set).

other water = some more water

The other + danh từ không đếm được = chỗ còn sót lại.

the other water = the remaining water

Another và other là không xác định trong khi the other là xác định, nếu chủ ngữ là đã biết (được nhắc đến trước đó) thì ta có thể bỏ danh từ đi sau another hoặc other, chỉ cần dùng another hoặc other như một đại từ là đủ. Khi danh từ số nhiều bị lược bớt (trong cách nói tắt nêu trên) thì other trở thành others. Không bao giờ được dùng others + danh từ số nhiều

(another = any other book – not specific)

(the other = the other book, specific)

+ I Don ‘t want this book. Please give me the other.

(others = the other chemicals, not specific)

Trong một số trường hợp người ta dùng one hoặc ones đằng sau another hoặc other thay cho danh từ:

+ I Don ‘t want these books. Please give me the others.

+ I Don ‘t want this book. Please give me another one.

+ I don’t want this book. Please give me the other one.

+ This chemical is poisonous. Other ones are poisonous too.

+ I don’t want these books. Please give me the other ones.

+ I don’t want this book. I want that.

II. OTHERS/THE OTHER/THE OTHERS

A. OTHERS

Others là danh từ số nhiều, là cách viết tắt của other + Ns khi không muốn nhắc đến danh từ lần 2. Không dùng others + danh từ đếm được số nhiều/ danh từ không đếm được.

nghĩa: những người khác, những cái khác

Ví dụ:Some of my students like Math, others (= other students) don’t.Some projects are shorter than others (=other projects).Some of these methods will work. Others (=other methods) will not.

B. THE OTHER

Như đã biết, the là mạo từ thêm vào trước danh từ để thể hiện tính xác định của danh từ đi sau. Ta dùng the other khi có 2 chủ thể mà nhắc tới 1 cái, ta nghĩ ngay đến cái còn lại..

1. Tính chất XÁC ĐỊNH và KHÔNG XÁC ĐỊNH

1.1 Xác định là gì?

– Một sự vật, sự việc, hiện tượng đã được nhắc đến từ trước

Example:

She has two sons. One is teacher and the other is a doctor. (Cô ấy có hai người con. Một người làm giáo viên và người kia là bác sĩ.)

(the other = người con trai còn lại – được xác định trong số 2 người con trai.)

– Đã có số liệu cụ thể và hiển nhiên.

Example:

Ann is holding her shopping bag with one hand and turning the door handle with the other.

1.2 Không xác định là gì?

Không thể xác định đó là đối tượng nào, chỉ nói chung chung hoặc nhắc đến lần đầu.

Example:

If he drives too fast, his car may crash into others.

(Nếu anh ấy lái quá nhanh như thế, xe của anh ấy có thể đâm vào các xe khác.)

2.1 Another (nghĩa là một cái gì đó khác) đi với một Danh từ đếm được số ít, không xác định

Example:

This cup is dirty. I would like to have another cup please.

(Cái ly này rất bẩn. Tôi muốn một cái ly khác.)

2.2 Another đứng một mình dùng để thay thế cho một Danh từ chỉ người (vật) cùng loại với người (vật) đã được nhắc đến từ trước.

Example:

I don’t like this phone. Could you show me another?

Tôi không thích chiếc điện thoại này. Cậu có thể cho tôi xem cái khác được không?

2.3 Another (nghĩa là thêm, nữa,…) có thể + Danh từ số nhiều, thường là các từ chỉ số lượng về tiền bạc hay quãng đường.

Example:

He gave the boy another ten dollars.

(Ông ta đưa cho thằng bé 10 đô-la nữa.)

-Other (nghĩa là khác…) đi với Danh từ không đếm được/Danh từ số nhiều để nói về người, vật KHÔNG XÁC ĐỊNH chung chung.

Example:

Be careful! Or else you will hit other people.

(Cẩn thận! Không thì bạn đâm vào người khác bây giờ.)

– The other (nghĩa là còn lại) đứng một mình, dùng để nói về một người (vật) còn lại trong hai hay nhiều đối tượng được nhắc đến từ trước.

Example:

He has three farms. Two is large and the other is small.

(Ông ta có ba nông trại. Hai cái thì rộng, cái còn lại thì nhỏ.)

– The other đi với Danh từ số ít hoặc nhiều bất kì, dùng khi những người (vật) này đã xác định.

Example:

She is different from the other students in Class 12A because she speaks a Southern accent.

(Cô ấy khác các học sinh còn lại trong lớp 12A vì cô ta nói giọng miền Nam.)

– Others (nghĩa là người/vật khác) đứng một mình, dùng để nói về người (vật) không xác định.

Example:

Some students like the headmaster while others hate him.

(Có vài học sinh thích ông hiệu trưởng trong khi những người khác ghét ông ấy.)

Some people buy things at this shop while some others prefer the opposite one.

(Một số người mua đồ ở cửa hàng này trong khi một số khác thích cửa hàng đối diện hơn.)

6. THE OTHERS

– The others(nghĩa là những người/vật còn lại) đứng một mình, dùng khi đã xác định người (vật) đang nói đến.

Example:

A: “Only half of the team members are training.”

(Chỉ có một nửa thành viên trong đội đang luyện tập.)

(Còn những người khác thì sao?”)

PHÂN BIỆT ANOTHER , OTHER , OTHERS , THE OTHER , THE OTHERS.

1.    1. ANOTHER :

-          Means : one more, an additional, an extra : 1 cái khác Your pen is out of ink, I’ll take another for you ( viết bạn hết mực rồi, tôi sẽ lấy cái khác cho bạn)

-          Another + N ( singular ) : 1 cái / thứ / người khác E.g : I need  another cup  tôi cần 1 cái tách khác.

2.     2.  OTHER other + N ( plu) = others . ( những người / vật / cái khác ). E.g :   -I have invited some other people.

-     -  I can’t help you because I’m busy with other things.

3.     3.  OTHERS others = other + N ( plu ) : ( có thể dùng làm chủ từ ) E.g : – I don’t like these postcards. Let’s ask for others. (others = other postcards)  tôi không thích mấy cái  bưu thiếp này. Chúng ta hãy xem các cái khác.

     -  Some of the presidents arrived on Monday. Others arrived the following day.

một vài tổng thống đã đến vào thứ 2. Những người khác đến vào ngày tiếp theo.  

4.     4.  THE OTHER : 1 cái/ vật / người còn lại trong 1 nhóm . E.g : I have two brothers. One of them lives in Canada. The other  lives in Japan. tôi có 2 anh trai. 1 người ở Canada, người còn lại ở Nhật.

5.     5.  THE OTHERS : những   cái/ vật / người còn lại trong 1 nhóm . E.g : take these and leave the others lấy những cái này và để những cái còn lại.
